Contactless cards are the next generation of bank cards. Instead of swiping or inserting a standard bank card, you can make transactions with the quick tap of a contactless bank card. Contactless cards have this symbol on the front or back. If you see this symbol on your card, you can tap it at OMNY readers at subway stations and on buses to make fare payments and enter the system.

Many banks and financial institutions have started switching to contactless cards to make payments faster and more secure for their customers. If you do not have a contactless card today, you can request one from your bank or financial institution. You can also link a non-contactless card to a digital wallet and use it with your smart device. Keep scrolling to learn more about digital wallets.

Learn more about digital wallets

\\n

Digital wallets are mobile applications that allow you to make payments with smart devices, such as your smart phone, smart watch, or wearable. Like contactless cards, smart devices also use contactless technology. Before you can make fare payments with your smart device at OMNY readers, you will need to add your bank card to your digital wallet.

\\n

If you have more than one card linked to your digital wallet, make sure to choose which card you want to use before you tap it at an OMNY reader. Otherwise, the OMNY reader will use the default card linked to your digital wallet.

\\n

You may need to unlock your smart device to use your digital wallet. Refer to the user guides and settings for your smart device and digital wallet to learn more.

\\n

When you add your bank card to your digital wallet, it will create a device account number. The device account number is different for each smart device that you use. The last four digits of each device account number will appear in your OMNY account when you tap your smart device at OMNY readers.

If your bank card has a chip but is not contactless, you can still add it to your digital wallet on your smart device to make contactless fare payments.
Certain bank cards cannot be added to digital wallets to make contactless payments, so check with your bank and your digital wallet provider for more information.

OMNY readers installed at station turnstiles, AutoGates, and onboard buses allow customers to tap their own contactless cards or smart devices, or OMNY cards, to make fare payments. OMNY card sale commissions

\\r\\n

It’s simple: You get $0.25 for every OMNY card sold, 1% of your customers’ initial value load, and 3% on all subsequent reload values on their existing cards.

Any OMNY card holder can visit a retailer to add value to their cards. This includes reduced-fare seniors and people who bought their cards at MTA vending machines.

\\r\\n

About your commission

\\r\\n

Commissions are automatically deducted during the purchase process. New OMNY retail merchant applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible for commissions on orders:

Applicant must operate a visible retail store accessible to the public.
The retail store must have clearly posted operating hours.
It is recommended that merchants prominently display OMNY signage and materials on the premises.
Merchants must sell OMNY cards to the public during posted hours.
The physical address must be on file with OMNY for listing on this website, making it easier for customers to locate their retail store.
Merchants should be located in the New York Metropolitan Area, unless otherwise approved by OMNY.

How it works

\\r\\n

Tap your card or device for full-fare and Reduced-Fare OMNY trips on New York City Transit subways and local, limited and Select Bus Service buses.
Tap the same way every time to get fare capping benefits. If you tap a card, use that same card for every tap. If you tap a device, make sure you always use the the same device and the same card in your mobile wallet.
Customers will automatically receive free, unlimited rides for the rest of the week once they have paid $34 in fares (or $17 for registered Reduced-Fare customers).
The seven-day period begins whenever you make your first tap of the week. If you spend $34 within seven days, you ride free for the rest of the seven-day period. If you spend less, you only pay for the rides you take. The cap resets every seven days and restarts with your next tap.
Express buses, group trips, and transfers do not count toward the cap.

Earning a weekly pass: example

\\r\\n

Once you’ve paid $34 for fares in a 7-day period, you can ride free for the rest of the week. Here’s an example:

\\r\\n

A rider uses the subway to get to and from work, and takes it on weekends to go into Manhattan to meet friends. They also use the local buses in their neighborhood to run errands.
They use their smartphone to pay the fare, so each ride is $2.90.
After they have paid $34 in fares — the rest of the rides for the week will be free!

What is OMNY?

OMNY is the contactless fare payment system for public transportation in the New York region. Simply use your contactless credit or debit card, smart phone, wearable device, or an OMNY card to tap and go.

OMNY is accepted across subways, buses, paratransit, and other regional services. And yes, the MetroCard will eventually be phased out. So, let's get you tapping!

How to use OMNY

\\r\\n

Use a smart phone (with mobile wallet enabled), a wearable, or a contactless credit or debit card, or an OMNY card to pay your fare at subway turnstiles, AutoGates, and onboard buses (including Select Bus Service). Simply tap one of them on the OMNY reader.

Where can I use OMNY?

OMNY is accepted on MTA buses, subways, Staten Island Railway, Roosevelt Island Tram, Hudson Rail Link, and AirTrain-Howard Beach and AirTrain-Jamaica stations with more services to follow.

First ever tap with a credit or debit card? You can't pass it back (yet)

\\r\\n

If this is your first time tapping a particular bank card on any OMNY reader, you can't use it to pay for other riders on the same trip yet. This is because your bank must approve the transaction before any other fares are paid. Instead, use a separate payment method for everyone on your first trip.

\\r\\n

Approval generally takes only a few minutes, so you should be able to tap for up to four people on your next trip.

\\r\\n

However, using separate cards or phones allows everyone in your group to earn free rides. When each person pays for 12 rides using their same card or phone within seven days, any additional rides within the seven days are free, automatically. No sign-ups or apps needed, just tap. Learn more here.

About student OMNY cards

Student OMNY cards are:

Distributed exclusively by your school. You can’t get a Student OMNY card from the MTA.
Good for four free rides each day. You can tap a Student OMNY card whenever you want to take up to four free trips every day of the week, any time of the day. This includes a free transfer between the subway and local, limited, and Select bus service, or a free transfer between buses.
Valid all year long. Your Student OMNY card doesn’t expire until the next school year.

If you’ve used Student MetroCards in the past, you should know that Student OMNY cards give you more free rides with fewer limits.

\\r\\n

Four free rides every day
All day (not just certain hours)
Every day of the year (not just school days) - even weekends and over the summer
One card for the entire school year and the summer

Your Student OMNY card is for you – and only you! Don’t share it and risk having your pass confiscated.

Remember to always tap for your rides. Your tap tells the MTA how many people ride from every station and helps improve service.

How to get a Student OMNY card

Ask at your school. NYC Public Schools works with schools to distribute the cards.

Getting help with Student OMNY cards

\\r\\n

If your card is lost or stolen, let your school know right away. They’ll deactivate your old card and get you a replacement.

If your card isn’t working when you tap it, ask a station agent or bus operator for help. If your card still doesn’t work, return it to your school for a replacement.
